Street painting, the art form of using charcoal or chalk to create a large piece of art on the pavement, dates back to the 16th century in Italy. Nomadic artists travelled from city to city and chalked in front of churches and cathedrals. Many of them chose the Virgin Mary for their inspiration, and thus became known as Madonnaro, which translates to the Madonna.
In 1973, a city in Northern Italy wanted to showcase the Madonnaro and had the very first "Street Painting Festival" in Grazie di Curtatone in the middle of August. This year is the 50th Anniversary of this festival!
Leigh started street painting in Orlando, Florida's first event in 1995. Since then, she has produced over 530 street paintings, and has participated in numerous festivals all over the country as their festival consultant, teacher, and featured artist. She has also chalked in Florence Italy, and Curacao (in the Dutch Antilles).
Leigh has been teaching this art form in schools and for festival workshops since 1996, and loves sharing this art form with students of all ages. Street painting is one of the most popular art forms taught at Alfredson Academy of Art.
